“She Wore an Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny…”
Can you finish the song?
Swimsuits are a very controversial subject among girls and even Christian girls. I don’t think 2 piece swim suits and immodest one piece swim suits are appropriate for girls. (there I said it) I have felt this way for most of my life. The Bible tells us in 1 Timothy 2:9 “I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God”
I don’t think Paul is trying to be a kill joy when writing this, but I think Paul, being a man, is trying to keep women from being a distraction from what men see and think about.
Matthew 5:28 “Jesus told his followers, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart”.
So I think Paul, following the teachings of Jesus, is telling women to be modest, watch how you dress, don’t be a stumbling block.
Here is a video by actress, model, and fashion designer Jessica Ray where she presents some very interesting research on modesty.
Take a look (if you are watching from your phone, click the blue box).
Here is a quote from Jessica Ray:
“Fashion matters. It influences the imagination and drives the way people uniquely represent themselves. The evolution of the women’s swimsuit is one place where there has been a visible shift away from modesty. In the current world of swimwear, small is often beautiful and less is considered more desirable. But designer and actress Jessica Rey asks, “Who says it has to be itsy bitsy?” Rey argues that within the construct of modesty, there is a freedom—that modesty isn’t about covering up what’s bad, but about revealing dignity.”
When it comes to dress I know I lean fashionable but modest. I live by the verse, “Do unto others as you want them to do to you.” Luke 6:31
I don’t want my husband and son to be surrounded by immodesty so I don’t dress immodest around others.
You don’t have to agree with me but I hope this has caused you to stop and think about how we dress.
Go live today to the fullest,
