Why Are We Fasting?

On Tuesday the staff and spouses have been getting together to eat Daniel fast friendly food, and to pray together. Yesterday, Pastor Matt reminded us why we are fasting – and it’s not to lose weight. LOL! (that is a by product)

1. To cleanse the Heart-

There is a physical cleansing of the heart when you fast unhealthy foods; but more importantly, there is a spiritual cleansing. God is able to clean out things that we didn’t even know were clogging our hearts through a spiritual cleansing.

Psalms 51:1-2
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.

Psalm 51:10
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

2. To cleanse the Mind–

During the fast, we are asking God for wisdom and focus. Daniel received 10 times the wisdom of the other men. We are asking God for wisdom in the life decisions that we are making; wisdom in our relationships, our finances, our parenting…; asking God, what would you have me do? The Holy Spirit is the Great Counselor–the world cannot offer the right counsel.

3. Financial Provision–

We are praying for a financial miracle as a church, but some of us need a financial miracle in our lives. Ask God for wisdom on how to handle your money.
#1 is to start tithing
#2 pray about what God would have you give to the dream.

If God has our hearts, our minds, and our wallets, he has everything!

On your fourteenth day of fasting, remember:
1. Drink water or juice
2. Go to your prayer time and prayer place
3. Listen to a few of your favorite worship CD’s
4. Dialogue in your prayer journal
5. Focus on your meditation and listening

Today’s Quote:

“Fasting and praying will provide the perspective of God that can only be described as magnification as His perfect will, His presence and His power come into focus with greater clarity than ever thought possible.”

Jentezen Franklin

Thoughts for your Journal:
1. Read Isaiah 58 and see what is said about fasting. Write down your thoughts on what God is cleansing in you.

One more week – stay strong!

Brown Rice with Edamame and Vegetables

2 cups brown rice
4 cups water or vegetable broth
1 cup fresh squeezed orange juice
1 package frozen, shelled edamame
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup sliced white mushrooms
½ teaspoon cumin
1 clove garlic minced
½ cup chopped green onion

Combine orange juice and water/broth in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Add brown rice and bring back to a boil. Cover and reduce heat to low. Simmer for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Remove lid to let steam escape and set aside.

While rice is cooking, prepare edamame according to package directions but without salt. Drain in a sieve. Saute garlic, cumin, mushroom and carrot just until tender (do not overcook). Put rice in a large bowl and add the edamame and other vegetables. Top with chopped green onion.

Servings:4-6 entrée size

Serve with orange slices and celery sticks.

    your words are so great!
as someone new to the church, and who has recently prayed for christ to be in my life and my heart ( I feel so alive and so new!)
The fast has been like a new beginning for my Husband and I. I was excited when Matt first mentioned it, I thought “YEAH a way to be completely new” I have looked at it as a cleansing of not only the body but of my heart also. I was always a bit envious of people with such faith, and now I have it, and I feel like I am so full I am going to overflow, the piece that was missing from my life has been found!
I so look forward to coming to C3 every weekend, it is an hour of pure unadulterated peace to me!
    What a great 21 days!

Thanks for reminding us of why we are doing the fast. When I get discouraged I need reminding of why we are doing this. God’s grace and mercy is flowing through our church, and we are benefiting from his love, wisdom, and guidance. How awesome your words of encouragement are, and how needed they are right now. With just a week to go in our fast, I see how much I need encouragement now to make it to the finish. God is great, and wonderful, and there is no better way to praise him then to cleanse ourselves, in mind, spirit, and body! Oh, and the weightloss, not happening for me, but hopefully it is working for someone, ha ha.
