Who Has The Best BBQ?

Last week I had the privilege of speaking at an awesome church in Memphis, TN…The Life Church of Memphis with Pastor John Siebeling. This is a ten year old, multi-racial church that is rocking it for Jesus.

While in Memphis, Pastor John and Leslie took Martha and I out for some good ole Memphis BBQ. I have to admit it was good…put a little spicy BBQ sauce on it and I was in heaven. I felt a little guilty enjoying it because of my loyalty and passion for Eastern North Carolina BBQ. What do you think? Who has the best BBQ?

Pastor Matt-I def. need to weigh in on this one. (No pun intended) The Best BQ in my humble opinion would have to be Memphis not that I am opposed to Carolina mind you, east or west but after traveling the country and having the fortune to eat all of it I have to go with memphis thumbs up. Maybe we should have a BQ contest at church to see “who is the best of the best”. I would love to judge that.
    Lets eat!!!!!

Having grown up in California where BBQ was not a food, but a restaurant, a piece of equipment, or a method of cooking, the only barbecued food I knew about was beef. Since coming to NC, however, I learned otherwise and once I tasted Eastern NC BBQ, there is no comparison with anything else. It’s all good, but for me, Eastern NC BBQ is #1 hands down.

I’m more of an “Equal Opportunity” BBQ person, it’s all good to me, and if it’s not, then just put a little hot sauce on it.

Being from Eastern North Carolina there is NO other type of true barbeque in the US. I have tasted barbeque from other parts of the country and gotten sick on my stomach (literally) from it not being the REAL DEAL. I now just know that if a restarant advertises barbeque and is not from Johnston County eastward that I had better make sure it is eastern North Carolina Barbeque.

    Pastor Matt,
East vs. West aside, I hear that The Rev a.k.a Richard Scott, can put a hurt on some BBQ! My husband came home from his Connect group and had the audacity to WAKE ME UP to tell me about it!! Now THAT must be GOOD, ’cause ’round these parts, you should never mess with Mama’s coffee or sleep!! ha, ha!! 🙂

I have to give my personal oppinion on this one… being from the west, the words BBQ- always involved some sort of BBQ sauce. So being out here and tasting viniger on meat… total culture shock!
The spicy saucy shreaded beef- mmmmmm– bring it on— now that’s what I call BBQ!

  • Pipes

Which is better? Since I’ve never tasted Memphis BBQ I would have to say Carolina; however, being a California native for all of my life…I am partial to BBQ on the West Coast. But to be honest with you…I like it all! If you’re serving…I’m eatin’!

Man, where do I start? I love Virginia (I guess being from South Hill…I am partial to it!!!) style BBQ the best…not as much vinegar in it! When I was at EC back in the early nineties, I actually enjoyed the eastern NC style. Now that I am older and wiser…I am back to the spicy and tomato based sauce!!! There is a restaraunt in the Cary Towne area of Richmond called Double T’s that has great sauce!!! Stop in there and he will give you the low down on how the closer to the coast you are..the more vinegar and then westward it looses the vinegar. Intersting because the vinegar was once used to preserve the meat and that is why it is that way here! However…when it comes to bbq ribs…the best I have had have been in Erie, PA at family reunions!!! Okay it is lunch time now…I have made myself hungrier! 🙂

Being from Upstate NY, the BBQ that I know and love has nothing to do with pulled pork – when we say “Let’s have a BBQ”, we’re talking about burgers, coney dogs, and chicken on the grill with Spiedies sauce. Mmmmmm!

  • ken

Hog killing and Pork BBQ started in eastern N. C. It doesn’t get any better. Same is true for molasses and home made biscuits. Eastern cooking is like ACC Basketball “the best in the land”

  • Christal

Don’t buy into piggish lies, BBQ is for chicken 🙂 and we ALL know, that NC.. (Duke)<-- has chickens hahahahha sorry 🙂

  • Dr. Rob

Did you want a personal or professional opinion? Personally-Carolina BBQ is the best. Professionally-how’s everyone’s cholesterol?

  • Pastor Matt,
It was great having you in Memphis with us at the Life Church. I enjoyed our conversation about our children’s ministries. Thanks for a great message. Hope to see you again soon. Rock on!

I grew up here where I didn’t know that BBQ was anything else BUT pork and that if it was red it must not be done. So when I moved to Memphis, and Chicago and Florida…..it was a huge culture shock. Do you know they do not have RED hot dogs in Flordia? I would have mom send me hot dogs, Dixie Darlin cookies and BBQ so that I could get a taste of home. I feel like I am personally responsible for raising the cholesterol of most of the people in those states, because my Connect group can tell you, I have a hard time keeping my mouth shut….It has to be vinager, it has to be pulled and there has to be hushpuppies.

My vote would be NC…I’ve only had Memphis BBQ once and I was very young so basically NC is all I know. I would still prefer a red hot dog though:-) PS – My mom read your blog and said, “He isn’t supposed to be eating BBQ!” So although your mother is no longer with you, you have lots of “mothers” looking out for your best interest. Maybe grilled chicken tonight???

wow!!!! i’ve been giggling reading all the comments about bbq. ppl @ work must think i’m nuts. if they only knew what i was reading. neway, having been born in jersey & growing up in miami, i’ve never really understood the difference in bbq. don’t yell, pls 🙂 i’ve had a taste of the vinegar based sauce & it’s not really my fav. sorry & i hope y’all still love me, but it’s not my cup of tea. however, being married to a cuban, i can understand the deal with a pig-pickin’, cuban style, though.
thanks for making my day & making me smile. see y’all @ the week-end celebration.

BBQ? We’re all discussing BBQ? Well then…being from Michigan (GO BLUE!!!) we always bought our BBQ from the store – and it was KC Masterpiece. Many native NC’ers actually “make” their own BBQ sauce – at least on my block they do. As mentioned previously, vinegar(y) BBQ sauce was something I had never heard, nor dreamed, of until I came to NC in 2000. Now, NC BBQ is good, but I am still supporting the sweet and tangy BBQ sauce that I grew up with. My cholesterol is going up just thinking about this…off to Logan’s for some sweet ‘n tangy BBQ!!!
More importanly, Pastor Matt – Welcome Back!!!

  • Michael Norwood

There is no BBQ like Memphis BBQ. I’m sure Carolina BBQ is great, but I gotta go with the hometown ribs & pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw slapped on. Ummmh. Ps. Matt & Martha, we loved having you guys with us here in Memphis. You’re awesome!

  • Elizabeth

OK, I tried to resist because I know this will not be a popular opinion, BUT….TEXAS STYLE BBQ is the best!!!!!
