We have been asking these questions throughout the series:
What Are You Delighting In?
Who’s Guiding You?
What’s Your One Thing?
How do we live in Freedom?
Today’s question: Who or What Do You Worship?
Psalm 115:1-18, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness. 2 Why let the nations say,“Where is their God?” 3 Our God is in the heavens, and he does as he wishes. 4 Their idols are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. 5 They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see. 6 They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell. 7 They have hands but cannot feel, and feet but cannot walk, and throats but cannot make a sound. 8 And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them. 9 O Israel, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield. 10 O priests, descendants of Aaron, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield. 11 All you who fear the Lord, trust the Lord! He is your helper and your shield. 12 The Lord remembers us and will bless us. He will bless the people of Israel and bless the priests, the descendants of Aaron. 13 He will bless those who fear the Lord, both great and lowly. 14 May the Lord richly bless both you and your children. 15 May you be blessed by the Lord, who made heaven and earth. 16 The heavens belong to the Lord, but he has given the earth to all humanity. 17 The dead cannot sing praises to the Lord, for they have gone into the silence of the grave. 18 But we can praise the Lord both now and forever! Praise the Lord!”(NLT)
LIVE OUR LIVES SO THAT GOD GETS ALL THE GLORY
Verse 1 “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.”
WHATEVER WE GLORIFY OVER GOD BECOMES AN IDOL
Verse 8 “And those who make idols are just like them, as are all who trust in them.”
We become what we glorify.
If we glorify money then we will become materialistic and selfish.
If we glorify a girlfriend or boyfriend we will become more like them than we do God.
If we glorify our career then that’s where we find our identity and significance.
If we glorify a car, a house, a boat, or a hobby we will find our identify in that and will look for that to meet our needs.
If we glorify food then we will begin to look like food, healthy food will leave us healthy and unhealthy food will leave us unhealthy.
Philippians 3:18-19,“For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame.Their mind is set on earthly things.”(NIV)
TRUST IN THE NAME OF THE LORD OUR GOD
Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.”(NIV)
I don’t know about you but I want to live my life so that God gets all the glory.
I want to bear the Fruit of the spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
I don’t want to bear the fruit of the flesh: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these.
I want to trust God with my whole life! It’s easy to say we trust, God it’s another thing to really live it.
So this week really search your heart and ask yourself the question who or what do I worship?
