Monday Morning Recap

Yesterday at C3 we continued our RESET series with a powerful message on “How To Get A Fresh Start In Our Relationships” from Ephesians 4:17-32.

Matt reminded us that Reset means to “set again” or to “restore. Throughout this series our theme scripture has been Psalm 51:12-13
, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.
13 Then I will teach your ways to rebels,
and they will return to you.”

HOW CAN WE RESET OUR RELATIONSHIPS?

THROW OFF THE OLD! – We need to throw off our old sinful nature and our former way of life!
Ephesians 4:22, “throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.”
Remember we are now a new person. A new creation in Christ.

Matt gave the example of being a pack rat. He and I are opposite in this area. He tends to hold on to things and I like to throw things away! Whether you tend to be a pack rat or get rid of things easily, in the area of our sinful nature, we need to throw it off! Get rid of the old way of life and put the past behind you.

God wants to give each of us a fresh starts! Last week we looked at
2 Corinthians 5:17, “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

Only God can give us a new life and a FRESH START in our relationships. The devil wants to remind you of your past and get you to stay there, but God desires to give you a future and a hope!
The enemy also likes it when we remind others of their past failures or mistakes. Many relationships can never move forward and experience the joy and the blessings of God because they remind each other of past mistakes. You’ve got do deal with your disagreements, ask for forgiveness and move on.

God wants to RESET your relationship today! He wants to reset your marriage. He wants to reset your friendships. But it takes humility and throwing off the old… putting the past behind you!

PUT ON THE NEW!
Ephesians 4:24, “Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy.

One reason I like to get rid of old things is because I love to make room for the new! I love shopping and every girl knows, it’s a great feeling to put on a new outfit or a new pair of shoes! God tells us as we begin a FRESH START with Him we can put on our new nature that will help us RESET our relationships

Ephesians 4:23, “Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”
Let the Spirit RENEW or RESET. Sometimes we let the crowd control our thoughts and attitudes; We let our own flesh control us, or we let our enemies control us. Ask yourself ” who or what is in control of my thoughts?”

RESET YOUR THOUGHTS
Ephesians 4:23, “Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”

Our thoughts impact what we do and say. That’s why when we get a FRESH START the spirit renews our mind.

Romans 12:2, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”(NKJV)

The common way of thinking in society today seems to be to think negatively or to focus on the bad. But, as a believer your mind is not controlled by situations but by the Holy Spirit. You need to reset your thinking so you can know God’s will and direction for our life! And it’s good and perfect because our God is good and perfect.

How do we renew our mind? By getting into His Word and letting God’s words impact our words.

Matt shared a quote from Pastor Brian Houston, “Majority thinking, conventional wisdom, common sense, or the status quo, are NOT the companions of HISTORY MAKERS!”

We need to make sure we are connected to believers who are positive, lifegiving and are pursuing Jesus with passion! And we need to make sure that we are positive and life-giving in our words.

Ephesians 4:25, “So stop telling lies. Let us tell our neighbors the truth, for we are all parts of the same body.

Proverbs 16:23, “Intelligent people think before they speak.  What they say is then more persuasive.”

Matt reminded us that it is important for us to THINK before we speak…

Is it Truthful?
Proverbs 12:22, “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.”
Is it Hopeful?
Is it Inspirational?
Is it Necessary?
Is it Kind?
Proverbs 16:24, “Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.”(NIV)

RESET YOUR ATTITUDES
Ephesians 4:23, “Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.”

The enemy wants you to compete in your relationships but when God resets our attitudes we don’t compete, we compliment each other.

Ephesians 4:26-27, “And “don’t sin by letting anger control you.” Don’t let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 for anger gives a foothold to the devil.”

Matt gave the example of when Moses sent 12 spies into Canaan, the promise land. They spent 40 days exploring and brought back some of the fruit.  Ten came back with a negative report and 2 came back with a positive report.  They all agreed that there were Giants in the land and it was a land flowing with milk and honey.  But that’s where their agreement ended.  Caleb and Joshua were positive and inherited the land.  The grumblers wandered in the desert for 40 years, died in the desert and never got to experience the blessings of God.  All 12 spies received the same promise and all 12 Spies received the same opportunities. The difference was the 10 spies misunderstood their mission and they focused on the circumstances not on God’s promises.  Joshua and Caleb understood their mission and focused on God’s power not on their circumstances. We need to look at problems and obstacles as opportunities for God to do something Big!

Numbers 13:30, “Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, ‘We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it’.”

Joshua and Caleb never doubted the Israelites could take the land.  They based their report on God’s track record with the nation through the desert.  They admitted that there were obstacles, but they knew nothing could stand in the way of God.  They came back saying, “Yes, there are giants in the land, but they’re midgets compared to our God.  We can take them and the land!”

Don’t FOCUS on how big your PROBLEM is… FOCUS on how BIG your GOD is!

When God’ RESETS your life it impacts your thoughts and your attitudes!

Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”

We should ask God daily to search our minds and our hearts, and allow Him to reset any attitudes or thinking that are hindering our relationships!
