Impressions

Have you ever heard the phrase: “You only have one chance to make a first impression”?

I hear people say all the time, “You shouldn’t judge somebody by the way they look.”

But the truth is we do. The minute you see somebody you can think, they look nice, or they look sloppy, they sure are preppy, he’s a cowboy, they are very alternative, he’s a business man or woman, they are stylist, they are stuck in the 80’s…………

What makes us think these things? The way we look. It’s not because we’ve had a conversation with them or know what kind of person they are on the inside, we have an impression of them based on the outside appearance.

I was reading in 1 Samuel 16:7 “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart”.

This verse is not saying if it is right or wrong to judge people by their outward appearance, it is just stating a fact that people do judge by outward appearance.

However, God can look at our heart and know exactly what is going on. Even if I mislead you by my appearance, God knows my heart.

So what does your appearance say about you? The fact is people will make assumptions when they see us. When they get to know us their perception can definitely change, but we are constantly saying something without saying anything.

But the great thing is if I am giving off a wrong perception of me by my appearance I can change that. Now I can’t change my physical stature, I will always be 5’3”. But some things that I can change are whether or not I work to stay in shape, if I fix my hair, wear makeup, change my style, etc. I can let people know that I have disciplines in my life. I can let them know I care about myself and value the body I’ve been given without saying a thing.

So what are you saying about yourself without ever saying a word?

This week, everyday, do something to tell yourself and others you care about you.  Wear something that makes you feel good.  Do something healthy.  You can drink water all day.   Experts say we should drink half of our body weight in ounces.  Example, if you weigh 120 pounds you should drink 60 ounces of water.   If that freaks you out drink 8 glasses of 8 ounces of water.  I know what you’re thinking, “I will be going to the bathroom all day”.  That’s ok…your intestines need to get moving.

Let’s make choices that tell ourselves and others I care about me.

Matthew 22: 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Live while you are living,

Martha
