I Have Decided – Proverbs 5

Today’s post comes from Chris Pipes, Connect Groups Minister at C3.

Today’s Reading: Proverbs 5

Today’s Key Scripture: Proverbs 5:15-20 says, “Do you know the saying, “Drink from your own rain barrel, draw water from your own spring-fed well”? It’s true. Otherwise, you may one day come home and find your barrel empty and your well polluted. Your spring water is for you and you only, not to be passed around among strangers. Bless your fresh-flowing fountain! Enjoy the wife you married as a young man! Lovely as an angel, beautiful as a rose—don’t ever quit taking delight in her body. Never take her love for granted! Why would you trade enduring intimacies for cheap thrills with a whore or for dalliance with a promiscuous stranger?” (The Message)

As I read today’s scripture from Proverbs Chapter 5, it reminded me of a famous quote I once heard before: “Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay and cost you more than you want to pay.” That is so true. In this passage, Solomon is warning all young men to guard their hearts and eyes from sexual lusts. He knows the consequences of sin and he’s sharing his wisdom on how not to give in to temptation. In today’s culture that is not an easy thing to do, whether you are single or married. The lure of sex has tripped up so many men (and women) of all ages and it’s getting more difficult to stay pure. But in verse 15, Solomon reminds all young married men to never take love for granted.

This is so powerful! No matter if you are single or married never give in to the “cheap thrills” that sin so easily offers. Instead, delight in the goodness that God gives to you. He loves you so much and desires that you enjoy all the benefits of obeying His Word and living to please Him. Let me encourage you to guard your heart and mind and keep your eyes focused on God’s plan for your life.

Prayer Focus: Dear God, I thank you for your Word and the wisdom that it gives me. I know how hard it is to live pure and sometimes I desire sin over pleasing You. Help me to turn away from all sexual temptations that confront me every day and give me the strength to live in obedience to Your Word. Thank you for loving me and blessing me with so many incredible gifts. You are a good God and a great God! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
