I Have Decided – Proverbs 4

Today’s post comes from Lee Chatam, Director of C3 Leadership College.

The Path

Today’s Reading: Proverbs 4

Today’s Key Scripture: Proverbs 4:25-27 NLT “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.”

Today is Day 4 of our proverbs challenge. By now you have probably made up your mind to keep going for the entirety of the challenge or to bow out…Since you are reading this, however, that means you have made the decision to change your schedule, eliminate a couple things, and free up some time to be involved in the challenge. Can I tell you that God honors that? Not just because you are reading the bible, but because it shows you are serious about growing deeper in your walk. I am so thankful that our pastor challenges us to dig into God’s word because it’s in God’s word that we find true revelation.

I love this passage because most of us are goal-oriented people. We live our lives asking God what the next step is; what is the purpose for our life? Many of us are in a place where we are asking God what is next. That’s why I love this scripture. God is basically saying, “You do it.” The verse says, “Mark out a straight path for your feet.” It would be much easier if the path were already made for us, but that’s the thing about free will – We have the choice. That’s encouraging to me because as long as I’m in a relationship with Jesus, then I have no fear because his path is the safe path.

The first part of the scripture says, “Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies ahead of you.” It reminds me of Jesus calling Peter to walk on the water. As long as Peter had his focus on Jesus, he was successful. As soon as Peter focused on the waves and all that was going on around him, however, he began to sink. Our job is simple… Focus on Jesus. It’s when we lose focus of who he is, what he’s done and how much he loves us that we begin to focus on our own waves, our own problems. We think it couldn’t be possible to be used by God when we start to sink in our own unbelief. As long as we focus on Jesus, he will calm the storm and will allow us to do more then we ever thought we could.

Prayer Focus: As you pray this morning, pray that you would focus solely on Jesus. As we focus on Jesus, we have the confidence to mark out the straight path for our feet. Pray that as we do this, we also follow the scripture and don’t get sidetracked. The devil will throw all kinds of things, situations and even people to attempt to derail us. If we focus on Jesus and who he says we are, then we will finally walk on the safe path. This is the path that will always lead to victory, fun & success.
