I Have Decided – Proverbs 29

Today’s post comes from John Cole, Project 919 director at C3.

Today’s Reading: Proverbs 29

Today’s Key Scripture: Proverbs 29:25-26 “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety. Many seek the ruler’s favor, but justice comes from the LORD.”

On any given day, an individual may encounter hundreds of people. If it were not for others, much of what we do would not be accomplished nor would it have purpose. The truth is that everyone of those people each carry with them influence. For some, the influence is to do great things and go beyond what they could imagine; while for others, it may be to settle for the norm or take the easy way out.

Influence can come in many different forms; a leader, boss, pastor, celebrity or mentor. Hopefully they influence you to aspire to do something great (for yourself and for others). When under the influence of others, we study their words, their opinions and their actions, which in turn, shape our lives. We begin to look to others for affirmation and recognition of who we are becoming.

If we are not careful, its easy to allow those relationships to shift our focus. We no longer desire to please God, but rather to please man. We begin to find our identity in others rather than God. When we fear people (their thoughts, words, opinions, etc.) we place a weight and responsibility on those who were not designed to carry it. The beginning of wisdom is to fear God; the one who can deliver us and set us free.  He knows all things, sees all things and desires justice. While it is good to have influencers in our life, we should never begin to place our trust and security on one person. In each and everything that we do, we must first go to the Lord and be confident in his provision.

Prayer Focus: Lord, thank you for the people and the relationships that you have brought into our lives.  Help us to strengthen them and encourage others whatever the circumstance may be. Instill in us a deep reverence for your provision, help us to fear you and only you. Holy Spirit, help us to discern whether our actions are pleasing to the Lord or seeking the applause of man. Build in us a confidence and boldness that cannot be dampened and that will bring you glory. In Jesus name, Amen.
