Today’s Reading: Proverbs 23
Today’s Key Scripture: Proverbs 23:23 “Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment.”
For any journey or effort, there are some “must haves.” You know, those things that we absolutely need to make the outcome a success. If you’re building a house, you will need concrete for the foundation. If you are traveling to a new place, you will need directions with some type of map. If you’re going on a fishing trip, you will need bait on a hook and/or a net to get the fish.
The Bible tells us that we are on a journey through life. God has created us for a plan and a purpose. Our Heavenly Father loves us like a dad who’s trying to help us figure out the right direction for our lives. And He is a Father who never gives up on us!
He cares enough about us to tell us that there are some things we must have with us on this journey. In today’s scripture we’re told those “must haves” are: truth, wisdom, discipline, and good judgment. But you may be wondering how we find those things. Scripture also gives us direction in that area:
Truth: In John 14:6, Jesus tells us that He is the way, the truth, and the life. There is nothing more valuable than the truth of Jesus Christ. Let’s thank God for sending His Son and for helping us always hang on to the Truth.
Wisdom: In 1 Corinthians 1:30, we learn that God gave us Jesus “…to be wisdom itself.” Let’s thank God for giving us Wisdom and for always being there in our time of need.
Discipline: In Romans 13, we see that when we clothe ourselves “…with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ,” we are protected by a supernatural discipline. Let’s decide that we will walk with Jesus and ask Him to help us when we need discipline in our lives.
Good Judgement: In Matthew 7, Jesus gives us examples of what good judgment looks like. Let’s thank God for His Holy Spirit who gives us the discernment and strength we need to make good choices.
Prayer Focus: In our quiet time today, let’s use our own words to:
- Adore and honor God for being our Heavenly Father and Provider.
- Confess to Him where we have fallen short in our journey and recognize that we need His truth, wisdom, discipline, and good judgment.
- Thank Him for doing whatever it takes to get our attention and meet our needs.
- Supplicate (which means to ask humbly) God to help us grasp onto the truth, wisdom, discipline, and good judgment in specific areas of our lives where we need each of those things.
