I Have Decided – Proverbs 22

Today’s post comes from Andrew Kurtz, Worship Minister at C3.

GROWING IN THE WORD

Let me start by congratulating you for finding this blog post. You’re putting effort into seeking out God’s Word for your day. If you’ve not yet started this 31 day bible reading challenge with us, start today! Remember, it’s not about how you start, but how you finish.

Today’s Reading: Proverbs 22

Today’s Key Scripture: Proverbs 22:17-19 “Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction. For it is good to keep these sayings in your heart and always ready on your lips. I am teaching you today—yes, you—so you will trust in the Lord.”

We all want to be more of something. Some want to be taller or shorter, some want to be thinner or more athletic, others want to be prettier or smarter. I personally have always wanted to have 6-pack abs, but have not YET achieved it. Some of those things are within our control and some are not, but the one thing that EVERYONE can control is their personal growth in Christ.

You know, the best thing we could ever do in our lives is to read God’s Word – the bible. It’s filled with life-giving words of wisdom, discipline, strength, hope, and victory to help us become the powerful and effective people we are called to be. Proverbs 22:17-19 talks about how important God’s Word teaches us how to grow in our daily lives; verse 17 even says to apply your heart to it.

Another scripture, Hebrews 4:12 says “For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.” It’s amazing how, when we really get in God’s Word (and not just skim a chapter per day), it really changes us for the better.

I believe it’s important to take the time to do that in the morning – I call it my quiet time with God. In the world we live in today, we have to somehow get our days started right with God’s Word. (Side note: You may say you’re not a morning person, but I believe we will do whatever it takes to do what is important to us. If you make God’s Word important to you, you’ll make time.) God’s Word is what’s going to give us the insight and discipline to live our day in a way that’s pleasing to The Lord. Do you want to become more patient or a better listener? Then read God’s Word. Do you want to become a good steward of your money? Then read God’s Word. Do you want to become a better dad or mom? It’s all in the bible. There are so many resources to help you understand and apply God’s Word as you read through it. So let me challenge you to start today with God’s Word and let it teach you how to live.

Prayer Focus: Father, help me to learn to love Your Word and live it out in my life today. Please make and grow me into the person that You created me to be. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
