I Have Decided – Proverbs 18

Today’s post comes from Sarah Buss, Children’s Minister at C3.

Where Do You Run?

Today’s Reading: Proverbs 18

Key Scripture: Proverbs 18:10-11 “The name of the Lord is a strong fortress; the godly run to Him and are safe. The rich think of their wealth as a strong defense; they imagine it to be a high wall of safety.”

Where do you run? When your day has been long and stressful, do you run to the refrigerator for that gallon of comfort, or do you find solace in the truth of God’s Word? When life throws you a curveball and you are thrown off course by a crisis, where do you go for comfort and peace?

The dictionary defines a fortress as, “a heavily protected and impenetrable building.” What a picture of strength and provision! The name of God offers us safety, security and the promise that no power will be able to pierce us. There is no other name that can grant us such assurance.

When David and I were first married, we chose to leave our C3 Church family and move to another state. The move was made based on a paycheck, not a word from God. We were beginning our lives together, and my need for financial security coupled with David’s desire to be the provider, influenced us to make that decision. Proverbs 18:10-11 reminds me of that time in our lives. I encountered many life challenges through those two years we spent away from our Clayton church family. Not once did David’s salary bring me joy, peace, strength or contentment. Whereas I believed that our “wealth” was going to be our defense and our security, I soon found out that only the name of the Lord provides true safety and protection.

I wonder how often we allow the enemy to confuse us into believing that anything other than the name of the Lord will provide for us. How often do we allow material possessions, new relationships, or job possibilities to skew our view of where we can find genuine peace and contentment? God is our source. He is our only means of strength. Whether we are dealing with a major life crisis, or simply the struggles we face day to day, God alone is our strong tower.

Prayer Focus: Dear God, Thank you for being my fortress. I praise You for the power that is Your Name. I repent for putting my trust in other things that do not provide ultimate safety and provision. Help me to trust in You alone. May I run to You daily, clinging to the safe assurance of who You are.
