Today’s Reading: Proverbs 13
Today’s Key Scripture: Proverbs 13:20 “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”
Growing up, my mom would continuously repeat a Spanish saying, an accurate portrayal of this Scripture, “Dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres.” In English this means “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.” In life, we get pulled in many directions by many people. At times, it is rather difficult to avoid, but GOD knows this and has grace for our bad choices. Looking back, the worst decisions I made were those when I was keeping the wrong company. It is wonderful to have insightful advice from one of the wisest men in history; his counsel is not to walk with “smart” people, but “wise” people. I find this distinction quite interesting. When I read the word “wise,” I imagine an older, gray-haired person, who’s gone through many tough moments in life and is still around to share his experiences. GOD to me is that wise man and HE tells us to walk with people who will offer guidance filled with HIS wisdom for us to not fall and pulled into foolishness. Consider what happens when we “walk” with someone. When you walk with someone, you cannot help but exchange dialogue; so you share ideas, advice and guidance. Walking with someone is indicative of going in the same direction as that person. Sometimes, you may get distracted from what your goal is and perhaps, not realize the path you are taking and what it’s leading you to. As you go through life, seek out those who not only are intelligent, but are wise, speaking aligned with GOD’S Word. Walk with those whose life is a reflection of where you want to be as it relates to GOD’S purpose and calling for your life.
I encourage you to decide in your daily walk to: pray, read His Word to gain wisdom, and seek wise people to surround yourself with. It might mean breaking ties with someone you’re walking with now, which is difficult, but according to the wisest man (and mom), harm awaits the companion of fools and who you are with, is who you become.
Prayer Focus: Lord, I thank you. In the middle of the mess I might have made, you are there to lift me up and cleanse me. Your grace has never failed me and it never will. I ask for your wisdom when it comes to who I listen to and share my life with. Help me through your Spirit to define which relationships are life giving and life taking. Help me set boundaries and guard my heart. Give me the strength to seek more fervently your presence and develop connections with those doing the same. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
