Today’s post comes from Andrew Kurtz, Worship Minister at C3.
The Generous Refresher
Let me first take the time to encourage you. If you are reading this, then you are putting forth an effort to seek The Lord. If you’ve not joined us yet on this 31 day challenge of reading through the book of Proverbs, start today! As you read, God wants to speak to you and give you wisdom on how to live your life. Ask Him to help you hear what He is saying.
Today’s Reading: Proverbs 11
Today’s Key Scriptures: Proverbs 11:11, 25 NLT “Upright citizens are good for a city and make it prosper, but the talk of the wicked tears it apart”…”The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.”
You know, before preparing this devotional, these verses had never connected in my mind. As a matter of fact, I don’t believe I ever really even noticed verse 11 before! But as I began really reading into this chapter, I believe the Holy Spirit helped me connect a few things.
As Christians, we are intended to make a difference in the places we work and live and interact in the world. But sometimes, we tend to stick to our group of church friends and forget that we’ve been strategically placed in our community to lift it up and support it – to be the hands and feet of Christ to the people who need the truth we have from the Bible. To live a life that is generous in many ways – with our time, our gifts and talents, and our money.
Another version of verse 11 says, “By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted.” Are we a blessing to our cities? This can very practically look like volunteering to help at local charities, being a friend to our neighbors, or being a smiling face to the people we run into during the day. Please understand that I’m not suggesting we leave the local church to minister to others. I’m simply suggesting we are a light to the places we already interact with on a daily basis.
This may sound like a lot of effort and pressure to always be on point; to always be the go-to and to always be the encourager – whether or not you receive encouragement. It can be, but verse 25 reminds us that if we become the person who refreshes others – who chooses to encourage and uplift – then we ourselves will also be refreshed. So make the choice today to generously refresh others around you and to be a blessing to the community around you.
Prayer Focus: God, You are so good to have put me in the place I’m in to make a difference. Make me a blessing to my community today. Help me to depend on Your Word to refresh me as I choose to be a refresher to others. Thank you for your presence in my life that leads me and guides me to make right choices throughout my day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
