“When we pray, “Deliver us from the Evil One,” we’re not always praying against things “out there” like a car accident, or a tornado, or any other evil plan of Satan’s to derail our life. Many times we are praying against our own inclinations to do stupid things. But stupid isn’t only showing off in physical feats of danger. Sometimes we need to pray, “Deliver us from the Evil One,” to ask God to keep us from stupid financial schemes that would drive us into bankruptcy. We need to pray for God to keep us from doing stupid things that would cause us to lose our job, or put our children at risk, or even end us up in prison.
There’s also another reason to pray, “Deliver us from the Evil One.” Think of the many times in your life when you are not in control. What would happen if a child darts out in front of your car and was struck? Or if you were involved in an accident in which someone was maimed for life? You might not be responsible for what happened, but your vehicle destroyed another life. You may be asking God to deliver you from a lifetime of guilt, or from a financial penalty, or from a consequence that takes away your freedom.
You can be on the Lord’s business, even serving with Christians, but you still need to pray, “Deliver us from the Evil One.”
