“Why must you pray for protection? Four reasons. First, this is a hostile world filled with snakes, hurricanes, poison weeds, germs and millions of other hazards, all results of the Fall (see Gen. 3). The earth feeds us, but it gives healthy enjoyable crops reluctantly. We have to cultivate the ground, plant, weed, water and protect our crops from fungi, insects, drought and storms. God can deliver and protect us from the hostilities of this fallen world.
Second, there are evil people in the world who mean us harm. They will steal from us, beat us up and attack us verbally and physically. God can deliver and protect us from evildoers.
Third, there is persistent evil in our hearts. We were born in sin (see Ps. 51:5) and evil has influenced every part of our life (see Rom. 3:10-23). We are blinded by our sinful nature and can convince ourselves we are doing the right thing even when we are harming ourselves (see Rom. 7:19). God can deliver and protect us from the evil in our own nature.
Finally, Satan hates God. Anyone on God’s side is opposed by the Devil: “Be sober, be vigilant[…]”
