13 Day Devotional – Day 1

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1

By committing to be a part of this season of prayer and fasting you are doing exactly what this verse commands. When we empty ourselves from things of this world, it allows room for God to fill us with His spirit. In doing this we are filled with new and fresh vision, passion and dreams. God’s plan is to have an intimate relationship with us and to be first place in our lives. When we remove distractions; whether it is food or technology or something else, we allow God to have our full attention.

As you begin this fast, be encouraged that God will meet you where you are and speak to you in ways that you can’t imagine. Trust that He has prepared and equipped you for all that He wants to reveal to you during this time. But remember, God may use this season to stretch you, to strengthen you and to purify you. Some of you, this will be your very first fast and that’s awesome. God is calling you to go beyond your comfort zone and trust Him on a deeper level.

Be sure that each day of this fast you are spending some one on one time with God. Being able to hear from Him is a gift to be treasured. Find your “tent of meeting” to talk to God and immerse yourself in His presence. His Word tells us if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. Thank Him everyday for the blessing you have and ask Him how He would use you to bless others. We all have something to give; time, talent, gifts, financial resources…something. We just have to be willing to surrender what we have to God and allow Him to use it for His purposes.

Lastly, don’t make this fast about legalistic restrictions but agree with God that you are purifying yourself so that He may fill you and use you how He would like. I love how James 4:7-10 puts it in the Message version:

“So let God work His Will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and He’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.”

Be strong, stay encouraged and remain faithful. God is about to do something BIG in your life and in the life of our church!
